Founded in 2003, ITDP's California Bike Coalition works to improve the quality of bicycles available in Sub-Saharan Africa through a unique partnership with the international bicycle industry.

The California Bike
Recognizing the need for good-quality bicycles in African cities, ITDP teamed with US industry experts to create a model product, the California Bike. By shouldering the risk of importing the bicycle into Africa, ITDP has created a proven social enterprise that provides the local bicycle industry with economies of scale, business development, and product diversification.

The Coalition: A Network of Bicycle Dealers
ITDP is bringing together small bicycle retailers in Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, and most recently, Tanzania to form the California Bike Coalition. Member retailers are given skills training and then accredited through a program that includes quality standards for bicycle assembly, repair and customer service.

Increasing Access to Bicycles
In addition to filling the existing need for good-quality bicycles in the general public, ITDP works to enable ownership for people who can't afford a new bicycle.  Employers throughout Africa are encouraging cycling among employees and setting up purchase programs to allow workers to buy California Bikes over time through paycheck deductions. Governments and NGOs are also purchasing bicycles for employees to use on the job, which they are often allowed to use for commuting as well. ITDP helps facilitate these purchases and gives maintenance classes to new owners of California Bikes.

has programs in Ghana, Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania, where we promote healthier cities and communities by working with the private sector, the public sector, and the nonprofit sector on interventions that, when woven together, form the foundation for increasing accessibility for all and for a better and healthier quality of life.  In each of these countries, ITDP is working on Bus Rapid Transit systems, bicycle promotion and advocacy, and other projects to make cities more livable.  (Learn more)
